Though English is universally understood and widely used, the indigenous language of the Highlands & Islands is Scottish Gaelic.
The group was formed in 1996 to help preserve the culture and heritage of the Strath area of Skye - traditional home of the Clan Mackinnon.
The John Muir Trust owns the Strathaird, Torrin and nearby Sconser estates.
The Trust was formed in 1983 to protect and conserve wild places and to increase awareness and understanding of the value of such places. It makes a point of working closely with the communities of the areas in its ownership.
In the village halls of Sleat in Skye, with a little help from European funds, the "Abair Thusa!" programme brings people together for tea and a talk with one simple rule: all conversation must be in Gaelic. Information about the project is available in both Gaelic and English.
